I am planning to manufacture a small line of dog clothing and accessories (dog sweaters, hats, harnesses, collars, id tags, charms, jackets, carriers) . Would I be subject to this new law even if my products are for pets, NOT adults or children /people?

I also plan to provide hand made dog clothing and accessories which are knit or crochet (scarves and sweaters for dogs AND human adults, etc). Additional items made for people may include handbags, charms and jewelry. This line is completely couture, meaning one of a kind. I consider them works of art and they will be available by special order only. Would my couture lines for pets or people be subject to this new law? If I later decide to make some of these items in manufactured quantity would I then be subject to this new law?

I do not plan to make anything for children at this time.

This is huge. It will affect every single person who creates, handsews, manufactures anything for children under the age of 12. It will very much affect small manufactures and boutique stores. The testing requirements that will be required starting in August of 09 are daunting and the cost of it will be very high. Obviously there is not very much lead in fabric but these requirements remain the same for cloth as they do for toys.

This has everything to do with clothing so get familiar with the law and be ready.

Amber,
I just came across your site, and felt an overwhelming sense of relief. My wife and I have decided to toss our hats into the ring, and we have launched www.kidcricket.com

We are using the on-demand model right now, to see if the designs are worth pursuing. Your blog is an invaluable how-to guide for anyone considering getting into this very tough business.

Also, your clothes are wonderful. Mary was constantly going.. Awwwww... when she saw the stuff.

thanks for all of your hard work.
